The Artist Date is a tool Julia Cameron uses in The Artist’s Way, a book I highly recommend which features a 12-step program to greater creativity. I like this idea because it encourages you to spend time with the most important person in your life: YOU. “The Artist Date is a once-weekly, festive, solo expedition to explore something that interests you. The Artist Date need not be overtly “artistic”— think mischief more than mastery.” You can read more about it in the PDF file found here. Anything you enjoy doing counts. I love going to art supply and toy stores, solo outings to the cinema are great (popcorn, soft drink & sweets are a must). A trip to the Sex Museum in NYC was a fun “adult” artist date once. I happened to walk by the Urban Outfitters store the other day and once inside, took out my iPhone and literally snapped hundreds of photos right in front of security guards & employees who didn’t even bat an eyelid (not always the case, so better ask before trying this).
Why don’t you take yourself out on an artist date this week? If you can, try documenting it with photos or video. If not, you can draw something inspired by the outing, or take a picture of something reminiscent of it, write a short story or poem or haiku… anything to share the experience with us here at createthreesixty5.com! Most of all HAVE FUN!!!
