“Concentrate on the Lines”

Horse's Head Drawing

Horse's Head Drawing

Teacher said: “I know this is a very difficult subject for a beginner’s class. You are not looking at proportion, this is a line drawing exercise. Concentrate on the line quality; the thickness of the lines, the different types of marks you can use [etc]. Don’t use shading other than solid black to show the interesting shape the shadow creates. Be detailed and truthful to what you see. Spend more time looking at the object than at your drawing. You have one hour.” Object in question was a horse’s head—fascinating and freaky—may as well have come from an alien… Didn’t Georgia O’Keefe paint these? I may continue working on it, but this is where it’s at for now.
