No Two Marks are Alike

Index of Mark-Making

In one of our first drawing classes, our teacher asked us to make and “Index of Mark-Making” using as many of our drawing instruments as possible to make different types of marks. I used charcoal, ink pen, graphite (not shown), conté (sepia) and dry pastel (red). This is a great way to get familiar with various drawing materials and also to discover first-hand, as the teacher keeps reminding us, that no two hand-made marks are ever alike. It’s a great icebreaker when you don’t know where to start and you’re facing a blank page, no matter what level you’re at. Try it for yourself and show us your results!

Shall do. Looks like fun. xxx

    • Great! I hope you’ll share the results. I want to do it again too. I saw some people get really creative with it in class. It’s a good idea to work on a large sheet of paper (like the cheap newsprint paper we used) that way you have plenty of room to express yourself. xx
