Colour Bands: Cont’d

From the first lesson we learned to simplify; use a more restrained colour palette, let the washes take up more space, resist the temptation to throw in the kitchen sink. I loved doing this exercise. On the face of it, it’s quite simple, relaxing and pleasant. But there were several of us who found it could be quite stressful too—what colours to put together? What kinds of washes to use? How many bands to aim for? The fact that there are few decisions to make once the format is determined makes those decisions seem all the more important. The only way to get beyond that is to keep doing more, as our teacher Elisabeth has been doing over the years. She has quite an astounding collection which shows her perfect mastery of the medium and I’m lucky enough to own one of her pieces.
